Blind Squirrel Rum owns and markets the "Blind Squirrel" label for distilled spirits. BSR has selected for its first product a fine amber rum produced and bottled by Don Perfil in Veracruz, Mexico and imported by Kodiak Imports. BSR is currently working with Kodiak Imports to identify other distilled spirits worthy of the Blind Squirrel label. Plans are in the works for "Old Blind Squirrel Rum", i.e., aged longer. If you're not a fan of rum, stay tuned for "Blind Squirrel Tequila", "Blind Squirrel Vodka", and more...
Blind Squirrel Rum employs spokespersons who create Blind Squirrel brand awareness through personal appearances, primarily in restaurants, bars, and sailing events.
BSR spokespersons possess a strong, personal appreciation for the role of rum in maritime history and its continuing popularity among modern day sailors.
The Sailing Origins of Blind Squirrel Rum
Sailing figures prominently in the culture at BSR. The original inspiration for the concept occurred about halfway between Canada and Maui on a 65 foot Swan in the 2002 Victoria to Maui race. It was here that the most inexperienced crew member's lucky call while at the helm earned him the nickname "Blind Squirrel".
In the years following the 2002 Vic-Maui some of the crew from Show Me would occasionally end up gathering together in the same town, usually San Diego or Honolulu, usually in bars, and usually after sailboat races. During many lively discussions among these sailors and their friends, the Show Me crew member "Blind Squirrel" kept bringing up a particular topic: "We should have our own rum!"
The Naming the Rum
It was Show Me's own Captain Rod who first suggested the rum be named after the Blind Squirrel himself.
This inspiration also occurred in a bar.
A Pirate Blind Squirrel is Born
Having named the rum, it was time to develop the artwork. The original "Blind Squirrel" artwork was commissioned by Blind Squirrel, Captain Rod, and several other crew on vacation in Lahaina, Maui during the 2004 Halloween festivities. The artist is a friendly fellow known locally as "The Starving Artist" named Dusty who operates a wonderful streetside booth in Lahaina. For a very reasonable fee, Dusty created a wonderful squirrel character that became the basis for the Blind Squirrel label. Dusty also created 5 handpainted T-Shirts based on that first sketch. Dusty is now the exclusive provider of original artwork for Blind Squirrel labels.
Our Discovery of Mexican Rum
Having settled upon a name, and a mascot, BSR's founders set out to find a suitable rum.
After a great deal of painstaking research they selected Don Perfil's 3 year aged rum to carry the BSR label.
Also available is "Old Blind Squirrel Rum", which is aged 10 years.
